POISON WIDOWS: A TRUE STORY OF WITCHCRAFT, ARSENIC

George Cooper's POISON WIDOWS: A TRUE STORY OF WITCHCRAFT, ARSENIC, AND MURDER (1999) recounts a string of murders in an immigrant community in the 1930s. People living in South Philadelphia's Little Italy were hard hit by the Depression.

Witchcraft and superstition were in the air many of them breathed and were used by three men to persuade wives to take out insurance policies on their husbands (and other family members) and then to administer to the victims a powder said to have magical properties.

When those who ingested the powder died, the shady masterminds claimed a sizable cut of the insurance.

Eventually, thirty defendants were tried. Some went to jail, and some were executed.
