E.G. Browne: ARABIAN MEDICINE

"It is a remarkable fact of history that Greek learning . . . is transferred to Asia and then returns to Europe in Arabic form. Greek medicine takes an Arabic shape. Hippocrates and Galenius reappear in Europe wearing turbans." --S. A. Rahman

ARABIAN MEDICINE, which we now add to the Classics of Medicine Library, relates the "remarkable fact of history" referred to by Dr. Rahman.

Edward Granville Browne (1862-1926), a Cambridge University professor of Arabic, delivered the FitzPatrick Lectures at the College of Physicians in 1919 and 1920. His talks, published in book form as ARABIAN MEDICINE in 1921, combined the two disciplines he had studied from 1879 to 1884 at Cambridge, medicine and Oriental languages.

Although Browne never practiced medicine, he had an abiding interest in the subject, and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1911. Before preparing his lectures, he consulted with the great physician scholar Sir Clifford Allbutt, among others. His contacts with Arabian scholars were extensive.

We are pleased to present this classic on a topic of perennial and current interest in the history of medicine.
